Dinner and breakfast served on board. | | Day 2 | Paris | Paris : Arrive Paris, "City of Lights," in the morning where we meet our escort and transfer to the hotel. We stop en route for Mass at Rue du Bac, where we also view the incorrupt body of St. Catherine Laboure. Our Blessed Mother appeared to this charity nun in 1830 to introduce the devotion of the Miraculous Medal. Check into the hotel. Dinner and overnight in Paris. (D) | | Day 3 | Paris | Paris : After Mass and breakfast, we enjoy a panoramic city tour of beautiful Paris, which includes the Eiffel Tower, Champs Elysee, Arc de Triomphe and Notre Dame Cathedral. Balance of day is at leisure to relax and enjoy Paris on our own. Overnight in Paris. (B) | | Day 4 | Cruise | Cruise : This morning we transfer to Gare de L'Est and board our first-class train to the hotel barge Lorraine, moored in the village of Kraft. Sip an aperitif as we are welcomed on board. (Meanwhile, luggage is quietly taken to the cabin.) Enjoy your first gourmet dinner on board this evening. (B, D) | | Day 5 | Cruise | Cruise : After cruising the peaceful Canal du Rhone au Rhin aboard our "floating country inn," drive to Colmar, renowned for its magnificent medieval and Renaissance buildings, 13th-century collegiate church, and Little Venice district. Enjoy a guided tour and free time to explore. Stop at the Unterlinden Museum, famous for its Renaissance art and home to the "Issenheim Altarpiece," While returning to the barge, we pause in picturesque Riquewihr for a tasting of local vintages. (B, L, D) | | Day 6 | Cruise | Cruise : In the heart of Strasbourg, we cruise past the European Parliament before disembarking for a walking tour of this beautiful city, including the picturesque Petite France riverside district and the remarkable Cathedral of Notre Dame. There is plenty of time to explore independently and take in the local customs and sites. Visit a museum; take advantage of the excellent shopping, or simply stroll the cobblestone streets. Return to the Lorraine in the nearby village of Hocfelden. (B, L, D) | | Day 7 | Cruise | Cruise : After breakfast and a short cruise, during which we can ride a bicycle or walk along the tow path, we visit a small local brewery. The best French beers are brewed in the Alsace region. It's time to return to the Lorraine for lunch and a cruise through Saverne and the Zorn valley to the fairy-tale town of Lutzelbourg, nestled in the Vosges Mountains. (B, L, D) | | Day 8 | Cruise | Cruise : We enjoy another wonderful breakfast before we set out to visit a crystal workshop to see how the region's renowned crystal is still created by hand. Back on board, we cruise into Lorraine, where the canal follows the steep-sided valley of the River Zorn to the famous inclined plane of Arzwiller. Here, a counterbalanced barge lift hauls us up nearly 150 feet from the Marne to Rhine Canal. We cruise through a cutting and two tunnels under the peak of the Vosges Mountains before mooring at a quiet spot near the village of Hesse. (B ,L, D) | | Day 9 | Cruise | Cruise : Cruise along the "summit pound," or highest section of the canal, passing through the regional park of Lorraine, a nature reserve with vast woodlands and lakes. The canal then begins its descent towards the Plain of Lorraine. After lunch, drive to Sarrebourg and visit the Chapel of the Cordeliers with its famed Chagall window. We return to Lorraine, moored in Xouaxange for our farewell gala dinner. (B, L, D) | | Day 10 | Paris | Paris : After breakfast we transfer to the railroad station in Nancy and board the first-class TGV (rapid train) back to Paris. Transfer from the railroad station to our hotel. Balance of day at leisure to do some last-minute shopping and sightseeing.
